A Gathering of Good Tension

A Gathering of Good Tension is a collaboration with Ellen Murphy Timbre, shaped by an emergent confluence of practice (craft/art), bodies (human/land/water/plant) and of time (past/present/future). The installation is comprised of 11 silver gelatin prints, simmens (handmade rope), box hand fabricated with lichen-dyed bookcloth & cast silver cordage pull. Foundational components of this piece stem from a previous project through which Kit researched and developed a committed ritual of making simmens as a corporeal practice of reconnection and collaboration with their Orcadian ancestors. A Gathering of Good Tension became a tangible exploration of the artists’ evolving relationship to each other, their art practices, and place. The interplay of body, landscape, rope, and the reflective mylar material woven throughout the images represent complex entanglements of history, self reflection, tension and presence.

This work was shown at the Mary E. Black Gallery (Kjipuktuk/Halifax NS) as part of the Craft NS exhibition, Symbiosis, in 2021.
