Making Maybes

A ceramics and sound installation that emerged from utilizing a repetitive process of precarious vessel making as a tangible practice of cultivating resilience in the face of fear and uncertainty regarding pregnancy and birth. This process-based work , created while pregnant, was an exercise in honouring unpredictability, impermanence and all potential outcomes.

The sound component of this piece is generated by water in suspended vessels falling in drops of different sizes, from different heights, and at different intervals onto the surfaces of vessels below which are wired with contact microphones. The resulting soundscape is amplified throughout the space, enveloping the public in an atmospheric wash of sound which changes over time as a result of shifting variables and their asynchronous interplay.

This work was exhibited at the Anna Leonowens Gallery (Kjipuktuk/Halifax) in December 2009. Wheel thrown/slip-cast stoneware, various glazes, silica sand, nylon pantyhose, latex, rubber, microphones, water, cable suspension, steel hardware.
